NIF Global Ahmedabad & Gandhinagar Students Set World Record with Chaniya Choli

September 15, 2026

Fashion is a powerful way to celebrate culture, creativity and tradition. The students from NIF Global Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar felt it through an extraordinary project that was inspired by the colorful celebration of Navratri in Gujarat.

The team made the world's largest Chaniya Choli in October 2024, which is 72 feet long and 18 feet wide. This achievement was entered in the official World Book of Records, London on 20 October 2024.

Vishal Makwana led the project, which involved students, mentors and volunteers working on a garment that was designed to celebrate the culture of Gujarat and to introduce the young designers to a big-scale project of fashion.

It is a testament to the hands-on learning that can make fashion education more meaningful, particularly for students looking for the Best Fashion Design Institute in Ahmedabad.

Turning Tradition Into Innovation

Navaratri is closely associated with the Gujarat culture, along with the Chaniya Choli. So the team selected this traditional dress as the starting point of the project and created a stunning dress measuring 72 feet.

The goal was not just to produce a larger than normal piece of clothing. The concept was to develop something memorable, yet have some connection to Gujarati traditions.

This approach reflects the importance of creativity in a Fashion Designing Institute, where students can learn to explore traditional ideas and develop them in new ways.

Over 1,100 Sarees Reused

The project took an important step towards sustainability. The team didn't go out with a fresh piece of fabric but actually gathered old sarees from the families in nearby localities.

Over 1,100 sarees were used to make the big Chaniya choli, which weighed about 500 kilograms.

The project illustrated the possibilities of the creative use of existing textiles. It also served as a valuable lesson for students interested in the fashion course on the responsible use of materials and the potential for reusing textiles.

Students at the Centre of the Creation

The project gave students an opportunity to experience fashion beyond the classroom.

Measuring, sorting the fabric, sewing, coordinating the colours and putting the pieces together for this size was a process of careful consideration. The student-mentor interaction was incorporated in the entire process, teaching them the practical aspects of designing on a large scale.

It is especially beneficial to anyone thinking about taking a fashion design course. It's not just about the creative idea, fashion is about planning, teamwork, attention to detail and the ability to solve unexpected problems.

Bringing a 72-Foot Garment to Life

It proved to be a technologically challenging creation because of its scale. Three cranes were employed to lift and position the garment, one of which was around 130 feet tall.

The finished Chaniya Choli was put on public display for seven days. Cranes also played a role in the display, helping to hold the structure up and handling any wind and stability issues that arose.

The project thus turned out to be a blend of fashion, design, logistics and technical implementation.

If you're in a fashion design class, it can help you learn more about how ideas are applied to flesh out projects into reality.

A New Perspective on Fashion Education

When students consider the best institutes & classes for fashion design, they may think of the practical exposure, creative projects, and industry-oriented learning.

Giving students the opportunity to work on ambitious projects such as the giant Chaniya Choli demonstrates the value of such work. They provide opportunities for students to use what they have learned in class and practice communication, teamwork and project-management skills.

The project also shows the correlation between creativity and cultural storytelling and sustainability in fashion education.

Fashion Design Course After 10th & 12th

Selecting a learning environment is a crucial step for students who are researching Fashion Design courses after 10th & 12th in Ahmedabad.

A fashion programme should be able to introduce learners to such areas as garment construction, textiles, design development, styling, illustration and presentation. Practical projects can also serve as a means for students to further appreciate how these skills relate to each other in the fashion industry.

When comparing fashion design courses, one can also consider curriculum, hands-on experience, building a portfolio, and mentorship and exposure to actual projects.

A Record That Inspires Future Designers

Students start thinking about fashion schools or fashion colleges near me and their future collections, runways and careers in the fashion industry.

Another view is provided by the NIF Global project. Fashion also has the potential to be a way of expression, a way of community involvement and innovation.

The world's largest Chaniya Choli assembled over 1,100 sarees, along with the contributions of students, mentors, volunteers and community members. It was recognised by the World Book of Records London and became an internationally recognised achievement.

The project holds great promise for NIF Global, as it demonstrates the power of young designers when they are given the chance to learn through practice and challenge themselves out of their comfort zones.

From traditional Gujarati attire to a record-breaking creation, the journey of this Chaniya Choli shows that fashion can preserve culture while creating something completely new.
